A Power Walk With Jesus

On Resurrection Sunday, the Risen Lord Jesus made five appearances which are recorded in Scripture. Luke 14:13-35 details one of these appearances. Two disciples (not a part of the original Twelve) were leaving Jerusalem after the Passover and heading home to Emmaus, some seven miles away. An interesting thought: the Greek language does not specify that both of them were men. It has been speculated that perhaps this was a husband and wife. There is even a possibility that if one of them was a women, she could have been at the Crucifixion (Matthew 27:55-56; Mark 15:40; and Luke 23:49).

  1. Jesus meets us where we are at- We see two despondent disciples heading home defeated. I can imagine the long seven mile walk that was ahead of them as they pondered all the events of the last three days. Thoughts of doubt, anger, unbelief, sadness, and so forth must have consumed them. But all of a sudden the Lord appears!

  2. Jesus does not expect us to be perfect- The Holy Spirit, in their unique situation, had blinded them from realizing the stranger they were talking to was the Risen Lord. This was to test them and their faith. As these disciples converse with the “stranger,” they do demonstrate some faith and knowledge. But their faith and knowledge is limited and flawed for they only called Jesus a prophet (v. 19) and believed His earthly kingdom would be immediately established (v. 21). How amazing it is to know that we do not have to be perfect in thought or action to accept Jesus or does He demand us to be perfect in our lives? He does expect though a life of faith, repentance, and continual trust in Him.

  3. The Word of God teaches us the Truth- These disciples and others had the extreme privilege of conversing with the Risen Lord, but for us Christians today, we have the Holy Spirit to illumine the Word of God (John 16:7). Just as Jesus went through the Old Testament with them and explained how the Word of God pointed to Him as the true Messiah, today the Holy Spirit teaches us as we read and study the Scriptures.

  4. True faith causes direct action, even in the face of peril- When they got home, Jesus reclined at their table and actually picked up some bread, blessed it, and began to serve them! Immediately, the Holy Spirit removed the blinders from their eyes and Jesus vanished from their presence. In astonishment, they remembered their hearts had been burning within them on the road as Jesus explained the Scriptures to them. They immediately made a decision to go tell all the other disciples back in Jerusalem what had happened. By this time, it was already night and in the Ancient Near East it was dangerous to travel after dark. Plus, they had already walked seven miles that day and now they were going to walk seven more to share their experience with the Risen Lord. How much are you willing to sacrifice to share what the Risen Lord has done for you?

Resurrection Sunday truly was a miraculous day of many wonders, but even greater wonders would soon come!
